Homocysteine (HCY) is a sulfurated aminoacid that derives from the demethylation of Methionine.
Homocysteine is considered an independent risk factor, because it is able to increase the incidence of
cardiovascular diseases independently of the presence of other causing factors. It also increases the risk
of other pathologies (venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism) as well as fetal malformations, mental
decay, Alzheimer and spontaneous fractures. Folates, B12 and B6 Vitamins intake can be successfully used
in different forms of hyperhomocysteinemia. For this reason, an early diagnosis is fundamental to avoid the
risk of cardiac and cerebrovascular thrombotic diseases.

Principle of the Method:

 Homocysteine is detected in plasma after treatment of sample with a reducing reagent and a specific derivatization reagent at 55°C for 15 min. After deproteinization the sample is directly injected into the HPLC.
